Lecture by Dr. Steven Horsley "System Leadership: Its Role in a Collaborative Environment" – a brief report

On March 18, 2021 another lecture in the "Leadership" series organized by The Department of National Security was launched online. Dr. Steven Horsley from the School of Business and Leadership at the University of Charleston, West Viriginia, USA was a guest lecturer. The topic of his presentation was: "System Leadership: Its Role in a Collaborative Environment".

On March 18, 2021 another lecture in the "Leadership" series organized by The Department of National Security was launched online. Dr. Steven Horsley from the School of Business and Leadership at the University of Charleston, West Viriginia, USA was a guest lecturer. The topic of his presentation was: "System Leadership: Its Role in a Collaborative Environment".

Dr. Horsley presented the elements of leadership from a systemic perspective in the context of dynamic changes in complex adaptive environments. He emphasized the importance of adaptation to the changing environment through collaborative activities based on a strategic approach, collaborative initiatives as well as reflective sense making and continuous learning processes. He pointed out that in the leader's immediate environment, in the workplace or in decision-making structures, it is important for him to develop an effective approach to cooperation mechanisms on the basis of the management of differences in the team and capitalizing on diversity,  feedbacks, as well as trust building and team empowerment.

In the second part of the lecture, Steven Horsley presented a design approach to problem solving focused on three tenets: understanding of the operating environment; problem defining; development of the right approach to the problem. He also drew attention to the key dimensions of leadership: the individual, the community and the system. In the conluding part of the lecture, Dr. Horlsey explained the links between collaboration and collective impact.

The lecture was followed by a Q & A session during which Dr. Horsley answered numerous questions from the audience.
